Fans came into WrestleMania 40's second night hoping that "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes would finish his story during Sunday's main event -- a "Bloodline Rules" match for the Universal Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns.
Unfortunately, the results of Saturday's tag team match, Rhodes and Seth "Freakin" Rollins vs. Roman Reigns and The Rock, put Rhodes' title hopes in question. After all, the title match would now be "Bloodline Rules," meaning anything goes, and Reigns had the entire Bloodline backing him up.
Rhodes had already lost to Reigns at WrestleMania before as well. Just one year ago, Rhodes had an opportunity to take the title and came up short. What would make this year any different, especially since The Rock had now joined The Bloodline? Well, this year Rhodes had some help of his own, from...a few unexpected sources.

Who helped Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40?
The first person to offer their help to help to Rhodes was none other than Jey Uso. After Main Event Jey's brother, Jimmy entered the ring to help Roman avoid losing, Jey came down the walkway to take on his brother 1-on-1.
After Jey, it was John Cena, who came in to take care of Solo Sikoa.
Unfortunately, The Rock came in to dispatch of Cena. Seth Rollins, in original SHIELD gear, tried to take out The Final Boss with a steel chair immediately afterwards, but Reigns was able to return to the ring and put Rollins out of business.
The Rock and Roman were ready to take out Rhodes for good at this point, but Rhodes had one more friend up his sleeve, and it was electric.
The Undertaker! It was brief, but it was epic! Undertaker showed up to put The Rock in his place one last time! And it helped Cody Rhodes finish the story!
And with that, the longest reign of the 21st century in WWE is over! The Bloodline is officially out of championships, and we've started a new era of WWE. It was arguably the most incredible five minutes in WrestleMania history, and we'll see how everything changes at Backlash on May 4.
What happened between Rhodes and Reigns on Night 1?
The main event of WrestleMania 40's first night was a tag team match of Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. If Rhodes and Rollins won the match, nobody from The Bloodline would be allowed ringside during the title match the following night. Unfortunately for the two faces, The Rock was able to pin Rhodes, meaning that The Bloodline would not only be present during the match, but the match would be "Bloodline Rules," meaning anything goes.
What happened between Rhodes and Reigns at WrestleMania 39?
This wasn't Rhodes' first opportunity to dethrone Reigns as the Universal Heavyweight champion. His last match against Reigns came at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles.
Rhodes lost the match though after Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, and Solo Sikoa intervened to help their Tribal Chief. Rhodes promised Reigns and the entire WWE fandom that he would be back, and earned that right after winning the 2024 Royal Rumble, his second consecutive Royal Rumble victory.
